Discover more about Empress Elisabeth Monument

The Empress Elisabeth Monument, a marble statue sculpted by Edmund Hellmer, stands as a tribute to Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi) in Salzburg. Unveiled in 1901, with Emperor Franz Joseph in attendance, the monument was initially located in the park of the Grand Hotel de l'Europe, across from the Staatsbahnhof (now Salzburg Main Station). To further honor the empress, the surrounding city district was renamed “Elisabeth-Vorstadt”. In 1925, the monument was moved to the grounds of Hellbrunn Palace, before being returned to its original site in 2002. The statue itself is crafted from Lasa marble, while the plinth is made of reddish Salzburg marble. A delicate garland of edelweiss adorns her head, and an engraving of a poem by Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach graces the plinth. Elisabeth's connection to Salzburg stems mainly from the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Bahn, a railway line that began operating in 1860, linking western Austria with Vienna. Sisi herself only made one extended visit to Salzburg in August 1867. Today, the monument remains a much-loved symbol of the popular empress, despite the limited Habsburg influence in Salzburg.
