From Rural Edge to Suburb

Riedenburg developed on the western edge of Salzburg outside the compact historic core, in an area shaped by fields, gardens and the lower slopes of the Mönchsberg and Rainberg. The name is associated with the local Riedenburg estate and the wider landscape around it rather than with Salzburg’s medieval commercial centre. For centuries, movement through the area was linked to routes west from the city, while the hills and open land limited dense construction. Its position between the old town and the settlements towards Maxglan later made it suitable for gradual suburban growth.

Nineteenth-Century Urban Expansion

Salzburg’s expansion beyond its historic fortifications gathered pace during the nineteenth century, and Riedenburg became increasingly integrated into the growing urban area.
