Fortress Hohensalzburg: Salzburg's Majestic Landmark

Explore Fortress Hohensalzburg, a majestic medieval castle offering panoramic views, historical insights, and cultural experiences in the heart of Salzburg.

4.6

Perched atop the Festungsberg mountain, Fortress Hohensalzburg is a symbol of Salzburg, Austria, visible from afar. Archbishop Gebhard I von Helffenstein built the fortress in 1077, and it evolved over centuries into the imposing structure seen today. The fortress stands as a testament to the power and resilience of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg. Originally constructed to protect the principality and the archbishops, the fortress was never actually attacked or conquered. Throughout its history, it served as a military stronghold, a storage facility, and even a prison. In the late 19th century, it transitioned into a popular tourist destination, with the opening of the funicular in 1892 making access easier. Inside the fortress, visitors can explore various museums, including the Fortress Museum, the Marionette Museum, and the Museum of the Rainer Regiment. The Princes' Chambers showcase original furnishings from the early 16th century. The historic armory houses an interactive exhibition on medieval weaponry. A panorama tour leads to the Reckturm viewing platform and the Salzburg Bull. The fortress also hosts concerts and other cultural events throughout the year.
