Getting There

  • Walking

    From Salzburg Central Station (Salzburg Hbf), follow Rainerstraße for approximately 15 minutes (950 meters) directly to Mirabellplatz and the palace. Alternatively, from the Old Town, cross the Makartsteg bridge and walk along the Salzach River to reach Mirabell Gardens in about 10 minutes.

    From Salzburg Central Station (Salzburg Hbf), take bus lines 1 or multiple trolleybus lines (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 14, 21, 22, 25) to the Mirabellplatz bus stop. The ride is approximately 5-8 minutes. A single ride ticket costs between €1-2. From the airport, take Bus Line 2 or 10 to Mirabellplatz.

  • Parking

    Several parking options are available near Mirabell Palace. The Mirabell-Congress-Garage offers 496 spaces and is located a few minutes' walk from the palace. Another option is the underground car park Auersperg, which is also nearby. Parking rates typically start at €3 per hour, with a daily maximum of €30. Be aware that the Mirabell parking lot is closed every Thursday from 00:00 to 16:00 due to a weekly market.

Mirabell Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as a testament to Salzburg's rich history and architectural beauty. Constructed in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau as Altenau Palace for his beloved Salome Alt, it was later renamed Mirabell by his successor. The palace was rebuilt in Baroque style between 1721 and 1727 by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt.The palace's Marble Hall, once the Prince-Archbishop's ballroom, is renowned for its opulent stucco and ceiling frescoes and is now a popular venue for weddings and concerts. Leopold Mozart and his children, Wolfgang and Nannerl, once performed here. The palace also holds significance as the birthplace of King Otto of Greece in 1815.The Mirabell Gardens, opened to the public in 1854 by Emperor Franz Joseph, are celebrated as some of Europe's most beautiful Baroque gardens. They feature geometrically arranged flowerbeds, mythological statues dating back to 1730, and the Pegasus Fountain, featured in 'The Sound of Music'. The gardens also include a hedge theater and a dwarf garden. Today, Mirabell Palace serves as the office of Salzburg's mayor and the municipal council, blending political function with cultural appeal.
