Discover more about Residenzbrunnen

The Residenzbrunnen, or Residence Fountain, stands as an exquisite historical landmark in the heart of Salzburg on the Residenzplatz. This magnificent square, originally named Hauptplatz, was designed in the late 16th century by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who demolished 55 medieval buildings to create a grand public space. The square is bordered by the Salzburg Cathedral, the Old Residence, and the New Residence. The Residenzbrunnen was built between 1656 and 1661 during the reign of Archbishop Guidobald von Thun. Tommaso di Garona designed the fountain, with Antonio Dario serving as chief engineer. The fountain, made of Untersberg marble, is one of the largest Baroque fountains in Central Europe, standing approximately 13 meters tall. The fountain's elaborate design includes a lower basin with Baroque decorations and the coats of arms of Archbishop Guidobald von Thun. At the center, a rock is surrounded by four water-spouting sea horses (hippocampi) and four Atlases carrying a shallow water bowl. Three dolphins support another basin, topped by a statue of Triton blowing water into the air from a shell. The fountain reflects Salzburg's artistic and cultural achievements during the Baroque period.Today, the Residenzbrunnen is a major attraction and a central meeting point. The square hosts sporting and music events, the Rupertikirtag in September, and a Christmas market during Advent.
