Discover more about Wolfgangsee Lake

Wolfgangsee, originally named Abersee, boasts a rich history dating back to 800 AD when it was first mentioned in records. Renamed after Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg, who established a pilgrimage site here in the late 10th century, the lake has since become a popular destination. The lake's stunning turquoise color is due to limestone crystals and the purity of its waters, which are so clean that Wolfgangsee is an EU reference water. Surrounded by the majestic Schafberg and Zwölferhorn mountains, the lake offers picturesque views and a wealth of activities. Visitors can explore the charming towns of St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, and Strobl, each offering a unique atmosphere. St. Wolfgang is known for its iconic White Horse Inn and the impressive Pacher Altar in the pilgrimage church. St. Gilgen, the birthplace of Mozart's mother, offers a scenic lakeside promenade and the Zwölferhorn cable car. Strobl provides a more relaxed atmosphere with natural swimming beaches and the Deutschvilla cultural center. Popular activities include boat cruises, hiking, cycling, and water sports such as sailing, diving, and stand-up paddleboarding. The Schafberg Railway, a historic cog railway, offers a scenic ride to the summit of Schafberg Mountain, providing panoramic views of the lake and surrounding area. In winter, the region transforms into a winter wonderland, offering opportunities for skiing and ice skating.
