Kremsmünster Abbey: A Baroque Masterpiece with Ancient Roots

Kremsmünster Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Upper Austria, stands as a testament to centuries of history, faith, and learning. Founded in 777 AD by Tassilo III, Duke of Bavaria, legend says the abbey was built on the site where his son, Gunther, was killed by a wild boar during a hunt. Over the centuries, the abbey has evolved, with its architecture reflecting different periods. While the original structure dates back to the Romanesque and Gothic periods, the abbey received a significant Baroque facelift in the 17th and 18th centuries. The library, completed in the 1680s, houses approximately 160,000 volumes, including the Codex Millenarius, a Gospel Book written around 800 AD. The abbey also boasts an astronomical observatory, known as the Mathematical Tower, constructed in 1750, which reflects the Benedictine tradition of science and education. Visitors can explore the abbey's rich history and artistic treasures through guided tours, which often include the library, the Emperor's Hall (Kaisersaal), and the treasury (Schatzkammer), where the Tassilo Chalice, donated by Duke Tassilo around 780 AD, is displayed.
