Discover more about Bezirksmuseum Floridsdorf

Step into the Bezirksmuseum Floridsdorf and embark on a fascinating journey through the history of Vienna's 21st district. Housed in the elegant Mautner-Schlössl, the museum offers a rich and diverse collection of artifacts, documents, and exhibits that tell the story of Floridsdorf from its earliest days to the present. The museum's origins trace back to 1933, when local school inspector Josef Tomschik conceived the idea of creating a museum dedicated to the history of Floridsdorf. In 1935, the Floridsdorfer Heimatmuseum was established. However, the original collection was almost entirely lost during World War II. A new association was founded in 1947 to rebuild the museum, and in 1951, it reopened in the Magistratisches Bezirksamt. In 1953, the museum moved to the Mautner-Schlössl, where it has been located since 1960, following renovations to address moisture issues. The Mautner-Schlössl itself is a significant historical building. Constructed in 1900 for Georg Anton Ritter von Mautner Markhof, it originally featured a Secessionist style. After his death in 1904, the building was Baroque style and the flat roof was replaced with the current hipped roof. The Mautner Markhof family owned the building until 1944, after which it was acquired by the City of Vienna. It briefly served as a replacement for the bombed-out district office before becoming the permanent home of the Bezirksmuseum. The Bezirksmuseum Floridsdorf is more than just a repository of historical artifacts; it is a vibrant center for cultural engagement. The museum hosts a variety of events, exhibitions, and educational programs throughout the year, catering to a diverse audience. Special exhibitions have covered topics ranging from local industries to the lives of notable Floridsdorf residents. One of the museum's highlights is its collection of items related to Ludwig van Beethoven, who frequently visited Jedlesee, now part of Floridsdorf. Another prominent figure honored in the museum is Franz Jonas, a former Mayor of Vienna and President of Austria, who was born in Floridsdorf. The museum features a memorial room dedicated to Jonas, highlighting his contributions to the city and the country. The museum's collections focus on the development of the landscape to the left of the Danube, the beginning of steam shipping, railway history and local history of the district.
