The Altes Rathaus, situated in Vienna's Innere Stadt (1st District), offers a captivating journey through the city's history. Originally donated to the city council in 1316 by Frederick the Fair, it served as Vienna's city hall until 1885. The building has been expanded over the centuries, incorporating neighboring houses. Architecturally, the Altes Rathaus showcases a blend of styles. While the exterior reflects the Baroque style of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, some Gothic elements are still visible. The main entrance features a portal dating back to 1700. The inner courtyard houses the Andromeda Fountain, created in 1741 by Georg Raphael Donner. Behind the courtyard stands the Sankt Salvator church, a Gothic church from the 14th century. Throughout its history, the Altes Rathaus has been a focal point for significant events. In 1671, Franz III Nádasdy was executed here following the Magnate conspiracy. During the March Revolution of 1848, the People's Security Committee convened at the Altes Rathaus. Today, the building houses municipal offices for the 1st and 8th districts, the Innere Stadt local history museum, and the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance.
