Hercules and the Nemean Lion Fountain

A mythological scene frozen in stone, the Hercules Fountain adds a touch of classical artistry to Vienna's serene Burggarten.

4.8

The Hercules and the Nemean Lion Fountain, nestled in Vienna's Burggarten, presents a captivating blend of classical mythology and Viennese history. The sculpture portrays Hercules during his first labor, slaying the Nemean Lion, a beast with impenetrable skin. This dramatic scene captures Hercules' strength as he grapples with the lion. Originally created around 1770 for the garden of Palais Kaunitz-Esterházy, the fountain was moved to its current location in 1948. Hercules, revered for his strength and courage, is shown triumphing over the seemingly invincible Nemean Lion by strangling it. This symbolizes the victory of human ingenuity over impossible odds. The Burggarten provides a fitting backdrop for the sculpture. Once the private imperial garden of the Habsburg emperors, it was redesigned as a public park in the 19th century. Today, it offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of Vienna, bordered by landmarks like the Hofburg Palace and the Albertina Museum. The park also features statues of Mozart and Emperor Franz Joseph I. The Burggarten itself was built in the early 19th century after the destruction of the city fortifications by Napoleon. The garden was designed in the English landscape style, featuring winding paths and scattered trees. In 1919, the garden was opened to the public.
