Discover more about Belvedere-Schlossgarten

The Belvedere Palace Gardens, a significant historical garden in the French style, exemplifies late Baroque garden design. Created in the early 18th century by Dominique Girard, the garden architect of the Elector of Bavaria, the gardens were commissioned by Prince Eugene of Savoy as part of his summer residence. Today, the gardens are a harmonious blend of meticulously maintained grounds and historical artistry, inviting visitors to explore its symmetrical beauty. The gardens are structured across three large terraces, connecting the Upper and Lower Belvedere palaces. Key features include symmetrical flower parterres, water basins, tiers and steps, and trimmed hedges, all reflecting the Baroque aesthetic. The large pool in front of the Upper Belvedere's outdoor steps mirrors the building’s façade, creating a stunning visual effect. Once, the grounds included a menagerie and a kitchen garden, which is now the location of Vienna's Botanical Gardens. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk through the gardens, taking in the panoramic views of Vienna's historic city center. The gardens also host contemporary art pieces, adding a modern touch to the historical setting. The Alpine Garden, established in 1803 and moved to the Belvedere in 1865, houses a valuable collection of Alpine plants and is open to the public during peak flowering season. The Sculpture Garden at Belvedere 21 offers free art experiences, blending international works and sculptures with the architecture. The gardens are open year-round, with varying hours depending on the season, and admission is free.
