Burg Heidenreichstein: Austria's Medieval Water Fortress

Burg Heidenreichstein, located northeast of Gmünd, stands as a magnificent example of medieval water castle architecture. Dating back to 1160, the castle boasts a rich history and has never suffered significant damage from warfare. It is celebrated as Austria's largest and most beautiful water castle, surrounded by moats fed by the Hauswehrteich and Romaubach streams. Access to the castle is granted via two drawbridges, leading to a Renaissance gate. The castle features four wings, three corner towers, and a central keep with walls up to four meters thick, reflecting various architectural styles. Inside, visitors can explore the three-story residential wing with spiral staircases and arcades, showcasing Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque influences. The castle's ownership has passed through several noble families, and today it remains the Kinsky family's permanent residence and administrative center. Visitors can take guided tours to delve into the castle's history and explore its well-preserved architecture. The outer courtyard hosts theater performances during the summer, offering a unique cultural experience. The surrounding town of Heidenreichstein is also worth exploring, with its historic square, Trinity Column, and Moorland and Peat Bog Museum.
