Discover more about Burgruine Dobra

Burgruine Dobra, located about 30 minutes northwest of Krems in the Waldviertel region, stands as a testament to medieval history and architectural ingenuity. The castle, dating back to the 12th century, was first documented in 1186 and derives its name from the Slavic word 'dobov,' meaning forest or oak forest. Once the ancestral seat of the Lords of Dobra, the castle occupies a strategic position on a wooded ridge surrounded on three sides by the Kamp River, now the Dobra Reservoir. Over the centuries, Burgruine Dobra has witnessed numerous changes in ownership and architectural styles. Originally a Gothic defensive structure, it was transformed into a fortified Renaissance residence in the 16th century. The castle successfully withstood a Swedish siege during the Thirty Years' War, a testament to its robust design. However, after the owners moved to Wetzlas Castle in the early 18th century, Dobra Castle gradually fell into disrepair. Today, Burgruine Dobra is a popular destination for excursions, events, and weddings. Following renovations in 2010, a festival hall with a terrace was added, blending the charm of the ruins with modern amenities. The castle's keep has been converted into an observation tower, offering panoramic views of the Dobra Reservoir and the Kamp Valley. Visitors can explore the historic walls, cellar vaults, and towers, immersing themselves in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The ruins are generally accessible year-round, with occasional closures for weddings between May and October.
