Mohndorf Armschlag: A Poppy Paradise

Nestled in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, Mohndorf Armschlag is a testament to community spirit and agricultural heritage. In 1988, the village revitalized itself by embracing the Waldviertler grey poppy, a variety with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. This initiative transformed Armschlag into a unique destination where visitors can immerse themselves in the world of poppies. The Mohnlehrpfad, a 1 km poppy trail, winds through the village, offering insights into the history, cultivation, and culinary uses of the poppy. Six display cases detail the plant's life cycle and cultural significance. The Mohngarten showcases diverse poppy varieties from around the world, featuring artistic installations inspired by the poppy. Culinary experiences are central to the Mohndorf Armschlag experience. The Mohnwirt, the village inn, features the poppy in its signature dishes. Visitors can also purchase local poppy products at the Mohnbauernladen, including poppy seeds, oil, jams, and liqueurs. The village hosts events throughout the year, including the Mohnkirtag (poppy festival).
