Discover more about Schloss Allentsteig

Schloss Allentsteig, a prominent landmark in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, has a rich and complex history. Originally constructed as a defensive fortress around 1100 by the Kuenringer family, the castle has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the changing architectural tastes of its various owners. The Kuenringers, granted the land in the mid-11th century, initially built the castle from wood, but it was rebuilt with stone after 1150. Strategically located atop the highest point in the area, the castle was a crucial defensive structure connected to the town's fortifications and local church. A deep ditch separated the castle and church, creating independent defense units. Over the centuries, Schloss Allentsteig passed through several noble families, including the Sonnbergers and the Lords of Maissau. In 1380, it came under the control of the Lords of Kamegg-Kaya, and by this time, Allentsteig was recognized as a town. Between 1544 and 1570, the castle underwent a significant transformation into a Renaissance Schloss. However, the castle's history took a dark turn in the 20th century when the surrounding area was designated as a military training ground in 1938 during the Nazi regime. Approximately 7,000 residents from 42 villages were displaced, and Schloss Allentsteig became the command center for the training area, a role it continues to serve. Today, while a portion of the castle is still used by the military, its historical and architectural significance continues to attract visitors. Although the interior is not generally accessible to the public, the exterior of the castle offers a glimpse into its rich history and architectural evolution. Visitors can wander through the adjacent park and admire the castle's imposing walls and towers.
