Schloss Schwarzenau
Schloss Schwarzenau: A Renaissance Jewel in Lower Austria
Explore Schloss Allentsteig, a historic castle in Austria's Waldviertel region, transformed from a medieval fortress to a Renaissance residence.
Schloss Allentsteig, located in Lower Austria's Waldviertel region, began as a wooden fortress around 1100 built by the Kuenringer family. Rebuilt in stone after 1150, it transformed into a Renaissance Schloss between 1544 and 1570. Today, the castle serves as a command center for a military training area, limiting public access, but its exterior and surrounding park offer a glimpse into its storied past.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Public Transport
From Allentsteig Bahnhof (train station), the castle is approximately a 30-minute walk (roughly 2.5 km). Follow the main road into town (Dr.-Ernst-Krenn-Straße), then turn left onto Pfarrer Josef Edinger Platz. The castle will be visible on your right. Alternatively, local buses connect the train station to the town center; check the VOR (Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region) schedule for the most up-to-date times. A short bus ride to the town center will significantly reduce the walking distance. Bus fare is approximately €2-3.
Driving
If driving, navigate to Pfarrer Josef Edinger Platz in Allentsteig. Parking is available near the castle. Parking is generally free, but spaces may be limited, especially during peak season. Be mindful of local parking regulations. From the parking area, it's a short walk to the castle entrance.
