Discover more about Teufelsmauer

The Teufelsmauer, meaning "Devil's Wall" in German, is a distinctive rock formation located in the Wachau Valley near Spitz, Austria. This natural monument is a spur of rock that dramatically juts into the Danube River, creating a striking visual landmark. The area is rich in both natural beauty and local folklore. According to legend, the Teufelsmauer owes its existence to a frustrated devil. Annoyed by the miracles at the Church of St. Johann in Mauerthale, the devil attempted to build a wall to flood the church. God allowed it, on the condition that the devil finished before the third rooster crow. The devil bought all the roosters except one owned by an old woman. When her rooster crowed, the devil, in a rage, stopped building, leaving the rock formation we see today. Geologically, the Teufelsmauer is composed of hard sandstones from the Upper Cretaceous period. Over millions of years, erosion and tectonic activity shaped the jagged cliffs. The rock wall is part of the Northern Harz Boundary Fault and is considered one of the oldest rock formations in the region. Today, the Teufelsmauer is accessible by footpaths and is a popular destination for hiking and sightseeing. The area offers stunning views of the Danube and the surrounding Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its vineyards, picturesque villages, and medieval castles.
