Discover more about Schloss Fischhorn

Nestled in the Austrian Alps near Zell am See, Schloss Fischhorn stands as a testament to Austria's rich cultural heritage. Originally constructed in the 12th century, it served as a fortified residence for local nobles, controlling trade routes and offering a secure vantage point. Over the centuries, the castle passed through various aristocratic families, each leaving their mark on its architecture. The castle's architecture reflects a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. In the 19th century, Friedrich Schmidt renovated the castle with neogothic elements. Although a fire in 1920 destroyed much of the neogothic architecture, the castle was rebuilt in a simpler style. The castle consists of multiple wings, with a central keep, and includes a chapel. In the 20th century, Schloss Fischhorn transitioned into a hotel, welcoming visitors from around the world. Today, it offers a variety of experiences, including guided tours, historical reenactments, and traditional Austrian cuisine. Visitors can explore the grand halls, admire the intricate details, and immerse themselves in the castle's enchanting atmosphere. Schloss Fischhorn also has a dark past. From 1943, the Nazi's confiscated the Schloss and used it as a satellite camp for Dachau concentration camp. In May 1945, Hermann Göring stayed at the Schloss before being taken prisoner by American soldiers. The castle's location makes it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding natural beauty, including Lake Zell and the Hohe Tauern National Park.
