Discover more about Fountains Square

Fountains Square, or Fəvvarələr Meydanı, is the beating heart of Baku, Azerbaijan, embodying the city's blend of Eastern and Western cultures. More than just a square, it's a dynamic space that reflects Baku's history and modern aspirations. Originally, in 1868, the area was planned as a space for military drills and parades, earning it the nickname “Parapet”. It was a barren area due to water shortages and was called “Dry Garden”. The transformation began in 1899 when Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev financed the Shollar Water Pipeline, bringing clean water to Baku. The area officially became a park after the pipeline's completion in 1916. Throughout the 20th century, the square underwent several redesigns, including a major upgrade in 1984 that introduced the decorative fountains that give the plaza its name. A comprehensive renovation in 2010 added elegant paving, restored historic facades, and introduced bronze sculptures like “Girl on a Bench” and “Girl with an Umbrella”. The square is now a popular gathering place, surrounded by boutiques, restaurants, and hotels. It hosts festivals, shows, and celebrations, and seamlessly blends modern elements with traditional styles.
