Discover more about Palace of the Shirvanshahs

Located in the heart of Baku's Old City (Icherisheher), the Palace of the Shirvanshahs stands as a testament to Azerbaijan's rich cultural heritage. This 15th-century complex, built by the Shirvanshah dynasty, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see destination for anyone traveling to Baku. The palace complex includes the main palace building, Divanhane (a pavilion), burial vaults, the Shah's mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi's mausoleum, Murad's gate, a reservoir, and the remnants of a bathhouse. The two-story palace exemplifies the Shirvan-Absheron style of architecture, featuring intricate stone masonry, domes, and arches. Construction of the palace complex began in the 15th century, after Ibrahim I of Shirvan moved the capital to Baku. The main building was completed in the 1420s, while other structures were added over time. The Shirvanshahs were patrons of the Helwati Sufiye order, and the palace is believed to be a memorial complex built around the sacred place of worship and tomb of Seyyid Yaxya Bakuvi. Inside the palace, visitors can explore the grand halls and chambers, admiring the intricate tilework and architectural brilliance. The Divan Khana, an elegant stone pavilion, was used for state ceremonies. The mausoleum is the burial site of Shirvanshah rulers and their family members. The palace mosque features beautiful stone carvings and a serene atmosphere. Much of the palace is in ruins, and some aspects have undergone renovations. However, the palace contains many beautiful and authentic structures and inscriptions, particularly in the Throne Room and the Bayil Stone Friezes. The bathhouse, located at the lowest part of the complex, was rediscovered through archaeological excavations.
