Located on the slopes of Mount Toghasar, near the village of Tugh, this 13th-century monastery complex was once a prominent religious and intellectual hub. Founded in the 1240s by brothers Sargis and Vrtanes, bishops from Amaras Monastery, Gtichavank quickly rose to prominence. Historical records mention its role as the seat of religious leaders, complete with a school, scriptorium, and library. The monastery's main church, constructed between 1241 and 1248, showcases exquisite Armenian architectural design, utilizing yellowish felsite stones quarried nearby. Intricate khachkars (cross-stones) adorn the interior, with one bearing the inscription: "In the year 1246, I, Ter Vrdanes put this cross for the peace of my soul". Throughout its history, ԳՏՉԱՎԱՆՔ (Gtichavank) has experienced periods of both prosperity and hardship. It flourished as a center of religion, politics, and culture, particularly under the patronage of the local rulers of Dizak. However, the monastery also suffered damage from earthquakes and periods of abandonment.
