Founded in the 1240s by brothers Sargis and Vrtanes, bishops from Amaras Monastery, Gtichavank quickly rose to prominence. Historical records mention its role as the seat of religious leaders, complete with a school, scriptorium, and library. The monastery's main church, constructed between 1241 and 1248, showcases exquisite Armenian architectural design, utilizing yellowish felsite stones quarried nearby. Intricate khachkars (cross-stones) adorn the interior, with one bearing the inscription: "In the year 1246, I, Ter Vrdanes put this cross for the peace of my soul".
