Lankaran Prison Fortress, or Zindan, is a historical monument located in the city of Lankaran, Azerbaijan. Constructed in the 18th century, it was originally part of a larger fortress system designed to defend the region. The fortress's architecture reflects the military engineering of the time, featuring a robust circular design intended to withstand sieges. Skilled artisans from Tabriz were brought in to construct the fortress, highlighting its strategic importance. Over the centuries, it has served various roles, witnessing key moments in the region's turbulent history. In January 1813, after a fierce battle, the fortress fell into Russian hands, marking a turning point in the war and leading to the Treaty of Gulistan, which annexed the northern part of the Talysh Khanate to the Russian Empire. In 1869, the Zindan Fortress transitioned into a prison, a role it fulfilled until 1959, earning it the name "Zindan," which translates to "dungeon" or "prison" in Azerbaijani and Persian. According to some reports, Stalin was imprisoned here in the early 1900s. Today, only two towers of the fortress remain, serving as a reminder of its storied past. After undergoing restoration in 2006, it briefly housed an art gallery. The fortress also provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Caspian Sea and the city of Lankaran. The Zindan Fortress is protected by the state as an architectural monument. Visiting the Lankaran Prison Fortress offers a glimpse into the region's complex history and the resilience of its people.
