Zagatala State Reserve, one of Azerbaijan's oldest reserves, was established in 1929 to preserve the unique plants and animals of the southern Greater Caucasus. Encompassing 47,349 hectares, the reserve spans the Zagatala and Balakan districts, showcasing a remarkable range of ecosystems from dense mountain forests to sub-alpine meadows. The reserve boasts over 900 plant species, including ancient broad-leaved trees like oak, hornbeam, beech, elm, and chestnut.
