Discover more about The Azerbaijan Government House

The Azerbaijan Government House, also known as the House of Government, is a monumental building in Baku, serving as the seat for various state ministries. Situated on Neftchilar Avenue, with its rear facing Uzeyir Hajibeyov Street, it holds a central place in Baku's administrative and cultural life. The building's history began between 1924 and 1927 with plans for large government structures in Baku. In 1932, a competition was announced for the design of the Baku Soviet Palace, later known as the Government House. Architects Lev Rudnev, Vladimir Munts, and K. Tkachenko won the competition, and construction commenced in 1934 but was interrupted by World War II, with completion in 1952. The architectural style combines traditional Azerbaijani motifs and Stalinist neoclassical elements. The facade features 50 marble columns, each over 13 meters tall, symbolizing 50 years of Soviet rule in Azerbaijan. A large dome, supported by four pillars, crowns the building. During the Soviet era, it served as the headquarters of the Communist Party. After Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, it transitioned to the seat of the country's government. While the interior is not generally open to the public, visitors can admire the architecture and gardens. The building is particularly striking when illuminated at night. Its central location provides easy access to other attractions like the Maiden Tower and Baku Boulevard. The construction of the building also led to the creation of Lenin Square, later renamed Azadliq Square.
