Bumthang Valley Essentials

Bumthang Valley is located in central Bhutan. The nearest airport is Bathpalathang Airport in Jakar, which has domestic flights from Paro and Gelephu. International travelers will first need to fly into Paro International Airport, the only international airport in Bhutan, and then take a domestic flight. Alternatively, you can travel by road from Thimphu or Paro, which takes approximately 8-10 hours. The journey offers scenic views of the Bhutanese countryside.
Once in Bumthang Valley, you can get around using taxis, which are the most convenient mode of transportation. You can also rent a car with a driver for a more flexible travel schedule. For shorter distances, bicycles are available for rent, providing a more intimate way to explore the valley. Public buses are infrequent but can be used for travel to nearby towns and villages.
The official currency in Bhutan is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN). History of Bumthang Valley

Bumthang Valley, located in the heart of Bhutan, is often referred to as the spiritual heartland of the country. The valley's name is derived from 'Bumpa,' a vessel used for holy water, and 'Thang,' meaning field. This name reflects the valley's deep spiritual significance and its lush, fertile landscape. Historically, Bumthang Valley has been a center for Bhutanese culture and religion, dating back to the establishment of various temples and monasteries in the region.
One of the most significant historical events in Bumthang Valley is the visit of Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, in the 8th century. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche subdued the local demon Shelging Karpo and converted the valley's inhabitants to Buddhism. This event is commemorated by several sacred sites in the valley, including the Kurje Lhakhang, where the guru's body imprint is said to be preserved in a cave.
Jambay Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, was built in the 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. It is one of the 108 temples he constructed to subdue a demoness who was obstructing the spread of Buddhism. This temple is a testament to the deep historical and cultural ties between Bhutan and Tibet.
