Getting There

  • Walking

    Start from the Jakar Dzong in Bumthang. Head southeast on Dzong Road towards the intersection with Jakar - Chumey Road. Continue straight until you reach the junction. Take a left onto Chumey Road and follow it for about 12 kilometers. As you walk, enjoy the scenic views of the Bumthang valley. After approximately 3 hours of walking, you will reach the Phobjikha Valley. Continue on the trail, which will lead you to a sign indicating Gangtey Monastery. Follow the signs uphill for about 30 minutes, and you will arrive at the monastery.

  • Bicycle

    From Jakar, rent a bicycle and set off on the Jakar - Chumey Road heading towards Chumey. This ride is about 12 kilometers and should take around 40 minutes. Upon reaching the Chumey junction, take a left and continue towards Phobjikha Valley. You can cycle through the valley, taking in the beautiful landscape, which will lead you to Gangtey Monastery. Once in the valley, follow the road signs leading you uphill to the monastery for about 30 minutes.

  • Hiking

    For an adventurous experience, start at the Jakar Dzong and take the hiking trails leading out of Bumthang. Follow the marked trails towards the Chumey Valley, which is about 12 kilometers away. This hiking route will take you through beautiful forests and traditional villages. Once you reach the Chumey Valley, look for signs directing you to Phobjikha Valley. The final ascent to Gangtey Monastery will take about 30 minutes of uphill hiking.
