Discover more about Parque Botânico de Ilha Grande

The Parque Botânico de Ilha Grande (PaB), established in 2015, offers visitors a unique glimpse into the history of Ilha Grande through its diverse plant collection. As part of the Ecomuseu Ilha Grande, a unit of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), the botanical garden serves as both an ecomuseological collection and a center for research, education, and conservation. The PaB's design incorporates various themed gardens that reflect different periods of human occupation and land use on the island. These include the Sambaqui Garden, representing the island's earliest inhabitants; the Caiçara Garden, showcasing the culture of the traditional fishing communities; and the Talhão Florestal, which reflects the colonial, imperial, and prison eras. A more recent addition focuses on the Anthropocene, highlighting the impact of human actions on the environment. The botanical garden is home to a diverse collection of plants, including native species, medicinal plants, timber trees, ornamentals, fruit trees, and edibles. It plays a vital role in the conservation of local biodiversity, particularly for rare and endangered species. The PaB also cultivates plants on the ruins of the former prison to showcase the island's rupicolous vegetation. Visitors can explore the PaB through guided or self-guided tours, learning about the island's history, the importance of plant conservation, and the sustainable use of natural resources. The park also offers virtual tours and activities for schools and the wider community.
