Discover more about Santa Teresa - RJ

Santa Teresa, perched atop the Santa Teresa hill, is a captivating neighborhood that offers a unique glimpse into Rio de Janeiro's past and present. Emerging in the 1750s around the Santa Teresa Convent, it was one of the city's first expansions beyond the original Portuguese settlement. The area quickly became a haven for the upper class, who built opulent villas inspired by French architecture, many of which still stand today. In the late 19th century, Santa Teresa experienced a surge in population as people fled the yellow fever epidemic in the city center. The introduction of the tram line in 1872 further boosted accessibility and cemented its status as a desirable location. Over time, the neighborhood attracted artists, writers, and musicians, transforming it into a bohemian enclave. Today, Santa Teresa retains its colonial charm with winding, narrow streets, and a thriving arts scene. Visitors can explore art galleries, museums, and cultural centers, such as the Parque das Ruínas, a former mansion that now hosts exhibitions and events. The neighborhood also offers stunning panoramic views of the city, Guanabara Bay, and Sugarloaf Mountain. The Santa Teresa Tram, or 'Bonde,' is an iconic symbol of the neighborhood and offers a scenic journey through its historic streets.
