The Monumento Nacional aos Mortos da Segunda Guerra Mundial, or National Monument to the Dead of World War II, is located in Flamengo Park, in the Glória neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. It was created to honor the Brazilian soldiers who fought in World War II, particularly in the Italian Campaign. The monument was designed by architects Marcos Konder Netto and Hélio Ribas Marinho, who won a national competition for the project. Construction began in 1957, and the monument was inaugurated on August 5, 1960. The monument is composed of three plans: the platform, the level, and the basement. The below-grade mausoleum holds the remains of 467 servicemen of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force who died in action in Italy during World War II. They were buried at the Brazilian Military Cemetery of Pistoia in Tuscany, Italy, until they were repatriated in 1960. The site includes a museum with military equipment used by Brazilian soldiers during the war, as well as a mausoleum containing the remains of 468 soldiers. The monument also features a 31-meter-high portico, a sculpture by Alfredo Ceschiatti depicting soldiers from the three armed forces, and a metal sculpture by Júlio Catelli Filho representing the Brazilian Air Force. The monument is guarded by a rotation of the three armed forces: the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
