Discover more about Câmara Municipal do Rio de Janeiro

The Câmara Municipal do Rio de Janeiro holds a significant place in the city's history. Founded in 1565 by Portuguese colonists, it has evolved through various political landscapes, mirroring Brazil's own transformations. Originally, the council was composed of a prosecutor and a judge. The first elections followed two years later, setting the stage for a long history of municipal governance. The council's functions have changed over time. In 1892, after Brazil became a republic, executive powers were transferred from the council to the mayor. The Câmara was briefly dissolved in 1937 during Getúlio Vargas' Estado Novo regime but reopened in 1946. The Câmara Municipal is currently located in the Palácio Pedro Ernesto, in the Cinelândia square, since 1977. The building itself has a rich history. In the early 20th century, the square became the heart of modern Rio, known as Cinelândia. The stately building initially served as the headquarters for Brazil's Supreme Court from 1909 to 1960. Today, the Câmara Municipal continues its work in the Palácio Pedro Ernesto, addressing the rights and duties of the citizens of Rio de Janeiro.
