Discover more about Monumento à Cidade de Salvador - BA

The Monumento à Cidade de Salvador, or the 'Monument to the City of Salvador,' is more than just a landmark; it's a testament to the city's vibrant cultural identity and resilience. Situated in the Comércio district, this striking sculpture, also known as Fonte da Rampa do Mercado, was created by Bahian artist Mário Cravo Júnior and inaugurated on January 13, 1970. Commissioned by the then-mayor Antônio Carlos Magalhães, the monument originally functioned as both a sculpture and a luminous fountain. Its modern design, standing approximately 16 meters tall, sparked various interpretations, with the most popular being its resemblance to the sails of 'saveiros,' the traditional boats that once docked at the market ramp. Constructed from fiberglass-reinforced resin, an experimental material at the time, the monument stood for nearly five decades. In December 2019, tragedy struck when a fire consumed the monument. However, in a remarkable display of resilience, the monument was restored and reinaugurated on January 11, 2023, reclaiming its place as an iconic symbol of Salvador. Today, it stands in the Praça Visconde de Cairu, near other significant landmarks such as the Elevador Lacerda and Mercado Modelo, continuing to remind visitors of Salvador's rich history and artistic spirit.
