Discover more about Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra

Perched on a peninsula in Salvador, Bahia, the Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra stands as a sentinel overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of All Saints. Construction began in 1534, making it one of the first forts in Brazil. Initially a rudimentary structure of rammed earth and wood, it defended against invaders and pirates. Rebuilt with masonry between 1583 and 1587, the fort took on a more permanent form. The fort strategically protected the entrance to the bay, offering a clear view of potential threats. In 1698, the first lighthouse in the Americas, the Barra Lighthouse (Farol da Barra), was installed to guide ships. The current lighthouse, manufactured in England, was installed in 1839. The fort's design was altered into a star-shaped polygon by military engineer José Paes Esteves. Today, the fort houses the Nautical Museum of Bahia, displaying maritime artifacts, boat models, and exhibits on the area's history, including the transatlantic slave trade. Visitors can explore the fort's well-preserved fortifications and enjoy panoramic views. The site also hosts cultural events and exhibitions.
