The monument consists of a six-meter-high pillar made of Portuguese Lioz limestone, topped with the symbols of the Portuguese Crown and the Cross of Christ. A panel of azulejo tiles illustrates the arrival of Tomé de Sousa. The pillar was carved by Portuguese artist João Fragoso. The tile panel is a replica created in 2003 by Eduardo Gomes, based on original work by Joaquim Rebocho from 1949.
