Discover more about Sala São Paulo

Sala São Paulo, nestled within the Júlio Prestes Cultural Complex, offers a unique blend of history and acoustics. Inaugurated on July 9, 1999, this concert hall is housed in what was once the grand hall of the Júlio Prestes train station, originally built between 1926 and 1938 to transport coffee to the port of Santos. The station, designed by architect Christiano Stockler das Neves, drew inspiration from neoclassical Louis XVI style and even New York's Pennsylvania Station. With the rise of automobiles, the station's use declined, and it was later transformed into a cultural center. The hall's dimensions, similar to 19th-century concert halls, made it ideal for conversion. The renovation, led by architect Nelson Dupré, aimed to create a state-of-the-art concert hall comparable to the best in the world. The project involved extensive acoustic treatment to neutralize vibrations from nearby trains. Sala São Paulo boasts exceptional acoustics, rivaling those of Vienna's Musikverein and Boston's Symphony Hall. Its adjustable ceiling, designed by Artec Consultants (now Arup), allows for acoustic flexibility, adapting the hall to different musical programs. The hall features 22 balconies, a floating floor made of Brazilian walnut, and a stage elevator for moving instruments. Today, Sala São Paulo is home to the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) and hosts a variety of national and international artists. It is a celebrated landmark that contributes to the revitalization of downtown São Paulo.
