Discover more about Fort Christian

Fort Christian, prominently situated on the waterfront of Charlotte Amalie, stands as a powerful reminder of St. Thomas's layered past. Constructed between 1672 and 1680 by the Danish, the fort was named in honor of King Christian V. Its imposing red walls, built three to six feet thick, have dominated the harbor for over three centuries. Originally, the fort served as the administrative hub of the island, housing the governor's residence, a church, and various government functions. The central tower, called Trygborg ('the safe castle'), offered a final refuge during attacks. Over time, the fort's role evolved, and it later became a prison and police station, serving in that capacity until 1983. Today, Fort Christian is a museum, displaying historical artifacts, photographs, and exhibits that narrate the story of the Virgin Islands from the Stone Age to the present. Visitors can explore the old jail cells, the courtroom, and admire the panoramic views of the harbor from the terreplein. The fort's iconic clock tower and vibrant red exterior make it a must-see landmark for anyone visiting St. Thomas.
