Completed in 1984 at an estimated cost of US$1.4 billion, it stands as the largest residential palace in the world, recognized by Guinness World Records. Designed by Filipino architect Leandro V. Locsin, the palace's exterior showcases a blend of Islamic aesthetics and traditional Malay architecture, highlighted by golden domes and vaulted roofs. The interior, designed by Khuan Chew, who also worked on the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, features opulent décor with materials like Italian marble, granite from Shanghai, and fine Chinese silk. Spanning approximately 2 million square feet, Istana Nurul Iman houses 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, a 5,000-person banquet hall, and a 1,500-person mosque. Other features include 18 elevators, 44 marble staircases, five swimming pools, a helipad, and a garage with space for over 100 cars. The palace serves as both the Sultan's residence and the center of government, hosting state events and foreign dignitaries. During this time, the Sultan and his family greet citizens and guests in a tradition known as 'rumah terbuka,' or open house. Outside of Hari Raya, the palace can be viewed from a distance, particularly from the Brunei River.
