Discover more about Nature Conservation Center Poda

The Nature Conservation Center Poda, located just south of Burgas on the E87 highway, is a unique and vital ecological site. Established in 1989, it stands as Bulgaria's first protected area managed by a non-governmental organization, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB). This remarkable conservation effort has transformed Poda into a model for sustainable nature protection, ecological education, and nature-friendly tourism. Spanning just over 1 square kilometer, Poda is a part of the larger Mandra-Poda complex and boasts an astounding biodiversity. It is strategically positioned on the Via Pontica, a major migratory route for birds, resulting in an exceptional concentration of avian species. Over 270 bird species have been recorded here, representing more than half of all bird species found in Bulgaria. This makes Poda a crucial stopover and nesting site for a wide array of birds, including Dalmatian pelicans, herons, egrets, and various migratory species. The Nature Conservation Center itself offers visitors a chance to observe and learn about the area's unique ecosystem. The center provides binoculars and telescopes for birdwatching from its terraces and along a dedicated visitor trail. Knowledgeable staff and informative exhibits enhance the experience, offering insights into local wildlife and conservation practices. Interactive modules like "bird watching", "sensations path" and "smell boxes" add to the experience. A cozy coffee shop provides a relaxing space to enjoy refreshments while immersed in the serene natural surroundings. Poda's significance extends beyond its impressive birdlife. The area also supports diverse populations of other animals, including colorful grass snakes, Etruscan shrews (Europe's smallest mammal), nutrias, and otters. The center is open year-round, providing opportunities to witness different bird species depending on the season. In winter, visitors can observe various swan and duck species, while the migration seasons of spring and autumn bring a surge of diverse birds.
