Discover more about Mezek fortress (Neoutzikon)

Mezek Fortress, also known as Neutzikon in Byzantine chronicles, stands as a testament to the region's turbulent past. Constructed during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus (1081–1118), the fortress served as a vital border defense, guarding the lands between the Maritsa and Arda rivers. Perched on the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains, near the modern village of Mezek, the fortress occupies a strategic location. Its walls, built from rubble stone and white mortar, enclose an area of approximately 7 decares in an irregular rectangle. The fortress boasts nine towers, with five strategically positioned along the southern wall, the most vulnerable side. These towers, reaching up to 10 meters in height, reinforced the stronghold's defensive capabilities. Throughout its history, Mezek Fortress was controlled by both the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires until the Ottoman Turks conquered it in the 14th century. Archaeological excavations have unearthed artifacts dating back to the 11th century, including pottery fragments, tools, and jewelry. Today, Mezek Fortress is recognized as one of Bulgaria's best-preserved medieval fortresses and is listed as one of the 100 Tourist Sites of Bulgaria. Visitors can explore the ruins, imagine its former glory, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Thracian Valley.
