The Thracian Tomb Shushmanets, located near the town of Shipka, is a remarkable testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Thracians. Part of the Valley of the Thracian Rulers, this ancient site dates back to the 4th century BC. Discovered in 1996, it stands as a prime example of Thracian architecture and artistry.Originally built as a temple, the structure was later used as a tomb. The tomb features a long, wide entry corridor leading to an antechamber. A unique Doric column, its top shaped like a knucklebone, supports the semi-cylindrical antechamber. The central chamber is circular, featuring a massive Doric column symbolizing the sun. The columns are thought to represent Thracian beliefs about the universe and their creation myth.Archaeological findings include remnants of a stone funeral bed, silver plates, an iron pruning knife, and funerary urns. The remains of sacrificed animals, including four horses and two dogs, were also discovered in the antechamber, suggesting religious rituals. Although the tomb was robbed in antiquity, its architectural design remains a captivating treasure.
