The remains of the medieval fortress, located in Hisarya, Haskovo, offer a fascinating glimpse into Bulgaria's past. Built in the 10th century on the foundations of a Thracian settlement from the 8th century, the fortress was once a vital defensive structure. Today, visitors can explore the ruins and imagine the lives of those who once inhabited this strategic location. The fortress is divided into an inner and outer city. Within the inner city, remnants of dwellings, water reservoirs, and pottery can still be seen. Artifacts discovered at the site include tools for woodworking, iron arrowheads and spears, and stonemasonry equipment. Over 100 graves dating back to the 12th-14th centuries, containing valuable jewelry, have also been found. The fortress is built into the slopes and rocks amidst a pine forest. Parts of the fortress date back to different eras, including the Early Iron Age, Roman, Early Byzantine, and Middle Ages. The entrance was once on the most inaccessible side of the hill, and some of the towers that provided protection for the stronghold are still preserved.
