The museum's roots trace back to the local Archaeological Society, founded in 1903, with the aim of establishing a museum and exploring historical monuments. Officially founded in 1953, the museum moved to its current edifice in 1984, a building constructed between 1884 and 1888 based on an Italian design for barracks, now recognized as a monument of culture of national importance. In 2000, it became the regional museum for the Pleven and Lovech provinces. Inside, a permanent exhibition of 5,000 items is spread across 24 halls, divided into five departments: archaeology, ethnography, the Bulgarian National Revival and Ottoman rule, modern history, and nature. The numismatic collection, featuring 25,000 coins, is one of Bulgaria's richest. The museum also houses a library with over 10,000 volumes of scientific literature. Visitors can explore artifacts from the Roman city of Ulpia Oescus and the Storgozia fortress, including architectural details, mosaics, sculptures, and household items. The museum's structure includes specialized departments such as Archaeology, History of Bulgaria XV - XIX centuries, Modern History, Ethnography, Nature, and more. The museum itself is housed in a two-story building with a total area of 7,000 square meters and a park with an open exposition.
