Discover more about Крепост Урвич - Цитаделата

Nestled in the Lozen Mountain near the village of Pancharevo, the Urvich Fortress, also known as Kokalyanski Urvich, offers a glimpse into Bulgaria's medieval past. This ancient citadel, likely established in the 9th-10th century, played a crucial role in guarding the approaches to Sofia (then known as Sredets). Perched on the Sredobarbie ridge, the fortress overlooks a scenic bend in the Iskar River, approximately 20 km from Sofia. Urvich's strategic importance is evident in its history, particularly during the Second Bulgarian Empire when it was a key defensive point against Ottoman incursions. Local legends connect the fortress to Tsar Ivan Alexander and his sons, with tales of Tsar Yassen's battles against the Ottomans in the surrounding areas. The fortress is believed to have been the last stronghold defending the Bulgarian state from Ottoman invaders between 1382 and 1389. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the fortress, including parts of the foundations, a preserved battle tower, and the fortress church of St. Iliya. The trapezoid-shaped fortress once spanned 350 meters in length and up to 150 meters in width, with battle towers strategically placed along its vulnerable sides. The remains of one tower still stand at a height of 7-8 meters, with walls 1.20 meters thick. Hiking trails surround the fortress, offering stunning views of the Iskar River and the Balkan Mountains.
