Discover more about Vitosha Nature Park

Vitosha Nature Park, established in 1934, holds the distinction of being the oldest nature park in the Balkan Peninsula. This natural haven is located on the outskirts of Sofia, making it an easily accessible and beloved recreation spot for locals and tourists alike. The park encompasses the entire Vitosha mountain, an area of 27,079 hectares, and is characterized by its dome-like shape formed by volcanic activity and subsequent geological processes. Vitosha boasts a diverse ecosystem with 61 types of habitats, including spruce forests, peat areas, moraines, and caves. The park's flora represents all vegetation zones found in Bulgarian mountains, excluding the alpine zone, and is home to Balkan endemic species like the Vitosha tulip. Wildlife is abundant, with around 200 bird species observed throughout the year, as well as various mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The park offers a well-developed tourist infrastructure with over 300 km of paths and alleys. Hiking is a popular activity, with trails leading to Cherni Vrah (Black Peak), the mountain's highest point at 2,290 meters, as well as other attractions like Zlatnite Mostove (Golden Bridges) and Boyana Waterfall. In winter, Vitosha transforms into a ski destination with two main ski centers, Aleko and Konyarnika. Vitosha's history is intertwined with the development of tourism in Bulgaria. The first organized tourist ascent of Cherni Vrah in 1895, led by writer Aleko Konstantinov, marked the beginning of the tourist movement in the country. Today, Vitosha Nature Park continues to be a symbol of Sofia and a vital resource for recreation and nature conservation.
