Discover more about Monument of Frontier Guard

Located in Varna's Sea Garden, near the Museum of Natural History, the Monument of Frontier Guard marks a site that once served as a frontier post during World War I. In September 1916, the commanders and men of the XV frontier group were besieged by enemy fire. Despite the dire conditions, they held their ground and launched a counter-attack until the regular army arrived. The monument was initially constructed in 1917, featuring a marble sculpture of an eagle crafted by Kiril Shivarov, under the vision of architect Evgeni Diakovich. This early version was known as the Eagle Monument. Around 1922, the sculpture was replaced with the current depiction of a border guard and a dog. Three sides of the monument's pedestal are inscribed with the names of the fallen soldiers, while the places where they perished are listed on the back of the marble slab. The monument has been maintained by border guards over the decades, with a restoration celebration in 1998. A renovation in 2015 was part of a municipal initiative to revive military monuments. Today, the Monument of Frontier Guard stands as a striking landmark, blending historical significance with the natural beauty of its surroundings. It serves as a place for reflection and remembrance, inviting visitors to connect with Bulgaria's past.
