Discover more about Garrapata State Park

Garrapata State Park, a 2,939-acre park established in 1979, is a stunning stretch of preserved land where the Santa Lucia Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean. Located just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the park features diverse coastal vegetation, redwood groves, and panoramic views. The park's history is intertwined with the Ohlone people, who thrived in the region for centuries. Later, the land was part of Rancho San Jose y Sur Chiquito, used for ranching by families like the Soberanes and Doud. The Soberanes family operated a cattle and sheep ranch for 24 years, offering hospitality to travelers. Francis Doud purchased the land in 1891, establishing the Doud Ranch, which ran cattle until the early 1950s. Today, Garrapata State Park offers a variety of activities. Hike along the coastal trails for breathtaking views of the Pacific, or explore the Soberanes Canyon Trail, which winds through a redwood forest. Garrapata Beach is a secluded sandy beach perfect for strolling and beachcombing. Soberanes Point provides excellent vantage points for spotting migrating gray whales during winter. Garrapata is subtly marked with numbered turnout markers along Highway 1, appealing to those who prefer an unspoiled natural experience. Be aware that portions of trails may be closed due to fire damage or hazardous conditions.
