Point Sur State Historic Park: A Coastal Sentinel

Point Sur State Historic Park, 19 miles south of Carmel on Highway 1, encompasses a dramatic landscape where the Santa Lucia Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean. The park's defining feature is Point Sur, a 361-foot volcanic rock connected to the mainland by a sandbar, creating the illusion of an island. This strategic location has served as a navigational landmark for centuries, with the Point Sur Lighthouse standing as a beacon of safety since 1889. The lighthouse was constructed after numerous shipwrecks off the coast of Point Sur. The lightstation included the lighthouse, assistant keepers' quarters, and other support buildings, housing up to four lightkeepers and their families. Life at the isolated light station was challenging, but the keepers maintained a vital service, keeping the light burning and the fog signal operational. The lighthouse was automated in 1974, but it remains an active aid to navigation. In addition to the lighthouse, Point Sur State Historic Park includes the former Naval Facility (NAVFAC), a top-secret Cold War listening post. Established in 1958, NAVFAC was part of a worldwide network of Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS) stations that tracked Soviet submarines. The facility operated until its decommissioning and was later incorporated into the state park. Today, Point Sur State Historic Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore California's maritime and military history. Guided walking tours provide access to both the lighthouse and the Naval Facility, offering insights into the lives of those who served at this remote outpost.
