History of Irvine

Long before the arrival of European settlers, the land that is now Irvine was inhabited by the Gabrielino (Tongva) people. They lived in the area for thousands of years, utilizing the region's abundant natural resources. The Gabrielino were skilled hunters, gatherers, and fishermen, and their culture and traditions laid the foundation for the region's rich history.
In the late 18th century, Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived in California. The land that would become Irvine was part of the expansive Rancho San Joaquin, granted by the Spanish crown. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, the land remained under Mexican control and was eventually divided into smaller ranchos. Cattle ranching became the primary economic activity during this period.
In 1864, a prosperous Irish immigrant named James Irvine acquired a significant portion of the former Rancho San Joaquin, which he later expanded to include the neighboring Rancho Lomas de Santiago and Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana. The Irvine Ranch, as it came to be known, spanned over 110,000 acres and became one of the largest and most successful agricultural enterprises in Southern California, producing crops like barley, beans, and oranges.
In 1894, James Irvine's son, James Irvine II, took over the management of the Irvine Ranch. He founded the Irvine Company in 1894 to manage the vast landholdings more efficiently.
