Long before the arrival of European settlers, the land that is now Irvine was inhabited by the Gabrielino (Tongva) people. They lived in the area for thousands of years, utilizing the region's abundant natural resources. The Gabrielino were skilled hunters, gatherers, and fishermen, and their culture and traditions laid the foundation for the region's rich history.

In the late 18th century, Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived in California. The land that would become Irvine was part of the expansive Rancho San Joaquin, granted by the Spanish crown. In 1894, James Irvine's son, James Irvine II, took over the management of the Irvine Ranch. He founded the Irvine Company in 1894 to manage the vast landholdings more efficiently. Under his leadership, the Irvine Ranch continued to thrive, and the company became a major player in the region's agricultural industry. The Irvine Company would later play a crucial role in the area's urban development.

During World War II, the U.S. government established the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro on a portion of the Irvine Ranch. The air station played a vital role in the war effort and continued to operate as a Marine Corps base until its closure in 1999. In the 1960s, the Irvine Company embarked on an ambitious project to transform the Irvine Ranch into a master-planned community.
