Housed in the historic Sonoma Grammar School, built in 1916, the center has been a cornerstone of the Sonoma Valley since its establishment in 1952.The center's story began when Dr. Carroll Andrews purchased the former Sonoma Grammar School building, which was deemed seismically unsound in 1948, and donated it to the community. This act of generosity transformed the building into a community center, ensuring its continued use for the benefit of Sonoma's residents. Today, the Sonoma Community Center enriches the lives of people of all ages and abilities by offering a diverse range of programs, events, and services. Over 200 classes are offered annually in areas such as ceramics, fine art, fiber art, music, movement, culinary arts, and writing. The center also hosts an Artist-in-Residence program, attracting expert artists to work and teach at the center.The Sonoma Community Center hosts a variety of creative community events throughout the year, including the annual Día de los Muertos celebration and a free Thanksgiving Dinner. The center also plays a vital role in the city's emergency preparedness plans, serving as the Emergency Volunteer Center for the City of Sonoma during local disasters and other emergencies.
