Nestled in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, about 25 miles south of San Francisco, lies Filoli, a country estate that embodies the grandeur and elegance of the early 20th century. Originally the private residence of William Bowers Bourn II, a prominent San Franciscan and owner of the Empire Gold Mine and Spring Valley Water Company, and his wife, Agnes, Filoli was envisioned as a self-sustaining haven, a place where they could "fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, and live a good life," as Bourn's personal credo stated. The name "Filoli" itself is derived from the first two letters of each word in this credo. Construction of the estate began in 1915 and was completed in 1917. The magnificent Georgian revival-style mansion, designed by renowned architect Willis Polk, boasts over 54,000 square feet, featuring 56 rooms and 15 bathrooms. The interiors were meticulously crafted to reflect the Bourns' refined taste and love for entertaining, with a grand ballroom, a formal dining room, and numerous drawing rooms. The ballroom even features murals by American painter Ernest Peixotto, depicting an atmospheric Irish landscape to evoke Muckross Estate, where the Bourn's daughter lived. Beyond the mansion, Filoli's 16 acres of formal gardens are a sight to behold. Designed in the English Renaissance style, the gardens are divided into distinct areas, each with its own unique character. The Georgian-style terraces offer sweeping views of the Santa Cruz Mountains, while the Sunken Garden provides a tranquil oasis with its lush flower beds and yew-lined avenues.
