Discover more about Legion of Honor

The Legion of Honor stands as a Beaux-Arts monument in San Francisco's Lincoln Park, offering stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean. It is a component of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF). Built to commemorate Californian soldiers who died in World War I, the museum first opened in 1924. Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, wife of sugar magnate Adolph B. Spreckels, persuaded her husband to fund the museum's construction. The building is a three-quarter scale replica of the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris. The museum's collections span more than 6,000 years of ancient and European art. Visitors can explore European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, as well as ancient art from Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Highlights include a collection of Rodin's sculptures, including a cast of *The Thinker*. The museum also houses the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, which holds one of the largest collections of drawings and prints in the country. Visitors can enjoy occasional classical music concerts played on the Spreckels organ, which was designed to imitate the sounds of various instruments. The museum also displays the Book of Gold every November to honor California veterans.
