Discover more about Jack London's Cabin

Jack London's Cabin, nestled in Oakland's Jack London Square, provides a tangible link to the life and adventures of the celebrated author. The cabin isn't a complete original, but a replica incorporating some of the logs from Jack London's actual Yukon cabin during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-98. Originally located on the North Fork of Henderson Creek, south of Dawson City, the cabin provided shelter for London during his time prospecting for gold. Although he didn't find gold, the experience shaped his writing. Decades later, trappers rediscovered the cabin, recognizing London's signature etched into a wall. In 1968, Jack London enthusiast Russ Kingman led an expedition to authenticate the cabin. Once verified, the structure was dismantled, with half the logs sent to Dawson City for a similar tribute and the other half to Oakland, London's birthplace. The Oakland cabin stands as a symbol of London's connection to the Alaskan wilderness and his Oakland roots. Today, visitors can explore the cabin and nearby Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon, a historic bar frequented by London. Jack London Square itself offers a mix of historical charm and modern attractions, with shops, restaurants, and waterfront views.
